Tenth Annual Watersheds & Wetlands Workshop

Carousel Resort Hotel, Ocean City, MD

 October 22-25, 2007

General Information

Watershed and wetland protection and restoration are now more crucial than ever and have been made part of the EPA’s list of priorities.  Protection and restoration using the watershed approach makes our tenth workshop an important venue for all who strive to protect our vital aquatic resources. This workshop will increase dialogue and foster partnerships among federal, state, and local agencies, tribal nations, non-governmental organizations, the scientific community, private industry, and all other stakeholders involved in the management of aquatic resources. Topics important to our aquatic resources such as sea-level rise, limited funding for research, monitoring, and restoration, population increase, guidance subsequent to the RAPANOS decision, and other relevant and current issues confronting all interested in aquatic environments are open for discussion.

 This year’s workshop will:

·    Emphasize managing aquatic systems through the watershed approach and green protection and management techniques.

·    Provide a great opportunity to hear knowledgeable speakers and interact with others who have similar responsibilities and duties.

·    Provide interested parties with an opportunity to synergize their talents.

·    Address issues such as storm water management, flood management through watershed protection, wetland mitigation, technical/political implications of the RAPANOS guidance, regionalization of the 1987 Corps’ Wetland Delineation Manual, wetland monitoring issues, and the remote sensing techniques, among others.

·    Will feature a student award for two poster presenters.

We will be joined by the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Society of Wetland Scientists.  They will sponsor awards for the student poster session mentioned above, and have a business meeting.  Take some time at the Workshop to join SWS if you are not already a member.  Membership details will be available.

The workshop will begin on Monday, October 22, 2007 at 9:00 am and continue until Thursday, October 25, 2007 at 4:30 pm. Optional field trips to Assateague National Seashore and Maryland Coastal Bay Restoration sites are scheduled for Thursday, October 25, 2007 for an additional $55.00.  At the end of each day, a social event is scheduled to enhance camaraderie in a casual atmosphere at the Carousel Resort Hotel.  On Tuesday at 5:30 pm, all registrants are invited to attend a Society of Wetland Scientists Mid-Atlantic Chapter business meeting.  Afterwards, there will be a social event from 6:30 until 9:00 pm at the Carousel Resort Hotel as an opportunity for informal exchange.
